Why Is Porn Everywhere On The Internet? Because It Can Be.

by Calico Rudasill, Sssh.com Porn For Women

While I accept it as a fact of cultural and political history, it has never made any sense to me that sex has long been a taboo subject for public display, or even public discussion, depending on where one happens to be at any given moment.

Ancient Porn

Consider all the things which appear to be universal, or nearly so, among humans. We all breathe, eat, sleep and eliminate bodily waste, one way or another. And with the exception of the occasional ‘test tube baby,’ we all got here by way of our parents having sex with each other – however uncomfortable this fact might be for us to think about.

What doesn’t mystify me, on the other hand, is the frequent presence of porn on social media, a fact which seems to really flummox and upset a lot of people.

Porn On Social Media Is Like That One Mountain We Used To Hear About

When I was growing up, I used to hear an old rhetorical question kicked around quite a bit: Why did the man climb the mountain? Because it was there.

To me, the answer to the question “why do so many people put porn on social media” is essentially the same: People do it because they can.
Back when Polaroid’s instant cameras became all the rage, how many hours do you figure transpired between the first sale of an instant camera and some enterprising user employing said camera to take photos of his or herself naked, or point-of-view pictures of his or her significant other performing oral sex, or some other manner of sexual activity? My offhand guess is less than one.

You can repeat this same rhetorical question with every communications technology throughout history, from the printing press to the Kinetoscope to modern smartphones.

To me, the question isn’t why do humans use every new technology available to produce pornography, the question is why does this fact still seem to surprise us?

Have Cave Wall, Will Paint Porn

Before humans had written codes of law, we were already making depictions of sex which would later be considered illegal “obscenity” under many of those eventual legal systems. As far back as Paleolithic Era, prehistoric humans were scrawling naughty bits on the walls of the Cresswell Crags, for example.

Ironically, perhaps, the region to which we often point as the original seat of what we now refer to as “Western Civilization” was chockfull of sexual depictions, many of which were displayed as publicly as possible.

The Greeks and Romans, in particular, were fond of painting sexual situations on everything from containers to oil lamps, suggesting it was no big deal to have pretty graphic imagery laying around the house for all to see. Similar items have been found from a variety of societies and cultures around the world which were (roughly) contemporaneous with the Romans and Greeks, including India (also famous for producing the Kama Sutra) and Japan.

Naturally, one could write several massive books about both depictions of sex and the prohibitions against such which have cropped up over the years, but I’m not sure any such book could answer the question I offered above. If anything, the ubiquity of sexual depictions in the ancient world only deepens the mystery of why such depictions are so troubling to so many people now.

Lots Of Subjects Have The Potential To Rankle People; Why Is Sex Special?

To me, asking why people insist on publishing porn on social media is a bit like asking why so many people watch sports – or perhaps more appropriate to the analogy here, why so many people listen to “sports talk” shows on the radio, or watch the same on TV.

For those who can barely drum up enough interest to watch a single game of any given sport, the idea of sitting around talking about damn near every game played in that sport with the passion of a religious zealot, it’s borderline insane.

In a similar vein, we’ve long since accepted that so long as it avoids graphic depictions of sex in the same film, a movie studio can churn out depictions of extreme violence until it runs out of Roman numerals to put after the word Saw.

Somehow, though, we accept televised violence and total sports-obsession with a shrug, but if someone were to go on the radio (publicly-accessible broadcast radio, I mean) and break down in detail precisely why they think their favorite porn star is the most talented performer of fellatio in the history of filmed pornography, we’d be liable to fine the radio station and deride the talk show guest as a filthy perv.

Go figure.
